WHAT IS BEHIND POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY?

In the last century, psychology, in addition to basic research, was mainly concerned with how mentally ill people can have a functioning life again. However, the complementary aspect was completely neglected: what can psychology do for the many healthy people? In 1998, Martin Seligman gave a keynote speech calling for future research into the positive aspects of life. Martin Seligman is one of the best-known and most respected psychology professors in the world and was the newly elected president of the influential American Psychological Association (APA) during his time. This was the birth of positive psychology.
